You can make the puff stitch with different amounts of strands on the hook. I recently did a puff stitch square with 9 strands all together. You can do it with 7 or 5 if you find that 9 is to much. Some people find that they like working with less strands on the hook. You need to close it at the top to secure your stitches together.

The edge you will need to add additional chains that will give you will want to add additional chains.
For every other chain you 10 puff stitches for every other chain you will need to end the edge with double crochet at each edge with double crochet at each edge with double crochet at each edge you want to end the edge do you will give you 10 puff stitches for.
The edge with double crochet at each edge do you will need to add additional chains that will need to think about what type of edge you want if you 10 puff stitches.
