Since your a beginner, use crochet.
It only takes one needle and is a little less difficult to learn.
Crocheting goes a lot faster than knitting and
for a blanket, it will be a thicker texture.
Knitting takes a lot more practice to get the stitches

I would try to make a fleece blanket for him. Fleece comes in great patterns and is easy to work with. You can look for his favorite sport and team or tie dye or camouflage. You can find easy directions on the Internet. You basically take two pieces of fleece the same size and cut equal fringe on each piece. You then place fabric (wrong sides together) and tie each piece of fringe together. Plus this blanket is super soft, warm and cozy. It will wash like a dream too!
You would be better off learning crochet first, it is easier.

Since you say you are a beginner, I am going to assume you are trying to figure which one to learn well enough to create a nice project.
I am going to recommend crochet. It is easier to learn. With crochet, you only have one hook in one hand and the yarn in the other. With knitting, you have a needle in each hand to hang onto and than you still have to deal with your yarn
You can make a nice throw blanket fairly quickly. the first stitch you learn in crocheting is the chain stitch. The second is usually single crochet and the thrid is usually a double crochet. You also learn to weave in the ends.
Now, if you know how to do all of these, you can make the following blanket. Since I have no way of knowing how much yarn you will need, I recommend you use Red Heart Super Saver yarn. There are no dye lots to deal with so you will not have to match yarn. You will need a size G or H crochet hook.
Step One: Make a chain stitch as long as the width you want your blanket or throw to be plus one extra chain stitch.
Step two. Single crochet back all the way across. Chain three and turn.
Step three: double crochet all the way across. Chain one and turn.
Repeat steps two and three until you have the length you want. Now, you will need several skeins of yarn. It is very eas to make wide stripes of color. Simply crochet until you about run out of yarn. Tie on another color at the end of the row. By changing colors at the end of the row, it is easier to eaave in your ends and now have them be seen. by alternating rows of single and double crochet, you make a very nice pattern.
Now, if you ony know how to do the chain stich and the single crochet, that is fine. Simply follow steps one and two except when you get to the end of the row, cahin one and turn instead of chaining three. This will make a blanket that is more of a solid piece of fabric.
Blankets are very easy to make but they can be time consuming so you might not want to go too terribly large for your first one.

Red Heart Super Saver yarn runs about $2.50 per skein and is availble just about anywhere yarn is sold. I like to get it at WalMart as they have the prices where I am at.

i would use crochet so that the project will get done before next month which is 3 and a half weeks away.
use super bulky yarn with a large hook to finish the blanket fast.
