Is that just common knowledge or does the pattern have to specify?

If it’s part of the pattern, of course it counts as a stitch!!

If it’s part of the pattern, it will be clearly stated in the instructions, even if it’s part of a repeat, and therefore, it is something that you will need to do. If you don’t need to do it, it will NOT be in the directions and you do NOT put it in of your own accord. You must only do what the instructions tell you.

Sometimes I have found that thinking too much will get you into trouble — every time.

The slip stitch closes the previous round. The ch 2 counts as the first stitch of the next round. There may be individual patterns that do something different, but that *is* the way it’s usually done.

If you’re asking whether you should count the ch 2 as a stitch for the verifying stitch count, yes, you should.
