I think it’s fantastic you’re learning how to crochet! When I was first learning how to crochet, I too, had difficulty in figuring out the next step. I think it’s important to know the difference between a FOUNDATION chain and a TURNING chain … although they’re created exactly the same way, each has a different purpose. Because of this, I’d like to recommend the Crochet Guild of America’s website for it’s chart on Turning Chains. It does offer “how to” drawings, you can check it out:
Next, The Craft Yarn Council of America also has a great “learning” online tutorial … it’s called “Each One Teach Two” and has the material so you can easily print it out. You can check it out at
Realizing some people are more visual and need to see the stitch making in “action” I recommend visiting the annies attic website at as they have free video clips ranging about 15 seconds long that you can play & replay on your PC. I would also recommend that you do a search on the Internet to see if there are local crochet classes or gatherings that might interest you; here in my neck of the woods in Connecticut we have a very active CGOA Chapter and “Coffee, Crochet & Chat” monthly gatherings.
Finally, I’d like to suggest joining an online crochet group for moral support. Yahoo hosts many great crochet groups and I’m sure you’ll find one (or more!) that you will enjoy! ![]()

Yes,
Leisure Arts has a video for beginners titled: “I Can’t Believe I’m Crocheting! In Motion.” It is a fairly new DVD and it comes with 3 projects-scarf, belt and small purse. The ISBN # is 2890603915. I hope this helps.
Here is an additional site I didn’t see mentioned that has some video tutorials I have found to be helpful:
Non-video links I found to be of help when learning,
Sometimes it just helps to see the same stitch or instructions from other perspectives.
Good luck; crocheting is a lot of fun.
Another place I like to visit is where a lot of nice folks are always glad to help with questions, or to vent frustration, or to show off your accomplishments.
