katrissa2000 asked:

I’ve just started to learn how to crochet and im getting really annoyed. I tried making a hat, but after a few circles around, it folds in A LOT (and it shouldn’t)
and im also crocheting too tight, but don’t know how to make looser loops. Its difficult to re-insert the crochet needle because the loops are too small/tight.

What are some helpful tips? I really want to pick up this hobby, but I always seem to have some issues with it.

loosen up! and practice practice practice!!! you’re holding the yarn too tight i.e.the tension is making your stitches too tight.also make certain you are using the correct needle size AND the correct yarn! yarn comes i n all different plys and thicknesses. maybe a larger needle would work bettedr for you until you get more experience?

Congrats on getting started crocheting!

First of all - are you following a pattern for the hat, or making it up as you go. It sounds like as you crochet in a circle, your rate of increasing the number of stitches is a bit off, which is making it fold over.

I looked up a free pattern for you to try that looks fairly straightforward…

As for the tension issues.. it’s a common thing to crochet too tightly when starting out. Are you tugging the loops tight after each stitch? That causes really tight stitches. Just keep the tension even, and try different size hooks - you may be using too small a hook for the yarn you’re crocheting.

Good luck! And if you haven’t signed up for Ravelry.com yet, you should give it a try, it is a wonderful resource for knitters and crocheters alike!

You just need to loosen up. It’s very simple really. There is no need to pull so tight on your loops, no need whatsoever. If you can’t get your hook into the spaces, then you really are making them way to tight!! Why are you doing that?? You are only making it worse for yourself. Just don’t do it!!

And maybe you need a bigger hook. Are you sure you have the right size yarn? There is a major difference if you are using the wrong one…. every yarn has a matching hook size, and the kind of projects you can do with it. This was (or should have been) all covered in your basic beginner crochet class. Maybe review your notes again.

Just loosen up. Don’t make more trouble for yourself. You want to enjoy this, not make it to be work!

It is frustrating when it just is not turning out the way you like it.
Try to use a larger crochet needle. Make your self a swatch
a sample one first, I generally do the first 3 or 4 rows in a smaller
scale to see if it is going to be the way it is being shown in the
pattern. I also would call a friend who knows how to crochet
and this way your able to correct the pattern and carry on.

My niece and I have made 3 YouTube videos about learning how to crochet. If you’d like to see them, go to:

I hope this helps a little!
